Mathematics

Junior School

Mathematics in Junior School is addressed in detail in the Curriculum booklets for JDC, 3 / 4 Cluster and the 5/6 cluster.

Senior School

In the Senior School all students are given the opportunity to participate in the following:

  • Maths Challenge competition (run over a three week period),
  • University of Melbourne competition,
  • Maths Enrichment series (over several weeks),
  • Australian Mathematics competition.

Middle School Mathematics

In Mathematics the staff work on the principle that students are taught most effectively when they are actually required to do Maths themselves. Instruction is based on big ideas or organising principles.
Using Bloom's taxonomy, and Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences, the faculty provides a range of methods of instruction. Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of their preferences and their strengths, and activities include:

  • Inquiry based learning through various methods of presentation
  • Written work
  • Visualisations
  • Peer teaching
  • Cross curricula programs such as the Year 7 Maths, Science and Humanities Project at the Zoo
  • A Maths Graffiti Wall in Year 7.

Senior College Mathematics is addressed in detail in the Year 10 Course Handbook and the VCE Course Handbook.
